Copy Editing
The "Five C's" summarize the copy editor's job. My job is to help you to get your manuscript:
I will correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, terminology/jargon, and semantics. I will maintain a dialogue with you during the editing process and ask questions that may help you to make changes in your content to clarify your text for your audience. My goal is to show you that I can connect with your text and treat both you and your writing with respect.
For the cost of a copy of your book and the postage, I will write a review for you wherever you would like it posted. Please know that I will only post reviews for books that I believe would be four or five star books. I write reviews for adult and children's books because I love to read and this is a great way to increase my personal library and meet lots of wonderful authors. I am now also accepting books "gifted" to my Kindle!!
** UPDATE REGARDING BOOK REVIEWS:
Due to a number of reasons, that I won't go into at this point, I only do book reviews on a limited basis. I apologize, but must put my time and energy into my editing clients. Thank you for understanding.
Fees will be determined by the following:
1) Word count
2) "Neediness"
3) Editing process
4) Timeline
We will need a "pre-editing" phone conference to determine our working process after I've had a chance to take a look at your manuscript. I also will email a fee agreement which I would appreciate being signed and returned to me via snail mail or emailed. The best working relationships happen when everything is upfront for both the editor and the author. I look forward to working with you.
In all cases, I will give your manuscript a minimum of two read-throughs. If you choose to be a "hands-on" author wanting to maintain your document, I will continue to edit as you go through the process of making your changes.
I really appreciate working with authors who enjoy the "banter" and dialogue that goes on during the editing process. It makes it more fun and stimulating for me and it helps both of us to learn along the way.
Time is precious, use it wisely!
"Who me? Need an editor? No way!"
I'm guessing this isn't your thinking or you wouldn't be at this site.
However, a number of authors have handed me a manuscript thinking that it was all ready for publication. They were thoroughly amazed when I began helping them to discover corrections that needed to be made.
When an author is so attached to his/her work, it becomes difficult to "step outside of their book" to see it as their audience will be reading it. I can be those new eyes to look critically and help you to improve a wonderful manuscript.
Our school district's motto at one point was "Great and Getting Better." I like to think along those same lines for the manuscripts that I edit. Your fiction or nonfiction writing can be great in content and I can help get the technical aspects of the manuscript to an even better level. Please take the time to read my reference letters. They give insight about my style and the relationships that I build with authors. I truly believe in teamwork.
Editing Process Choices:
#1 Hard copy returned to author via snail mail with all technical corrections marked, along with comments and questions which can help to improve content. Author makes actual changes to the manuscript.
#2 Editor "red letters" suggested changes on the manuscript using a tracking version of Word, which then allows the author to go through and make final decisions/changes. Notes will be added to the tracking version regarding questions/concerns that the editor wants addressed.
#3 Editor makes all changes on manuscript. Questions/concerns would be discussed through email dialogue as editor is proceeding.
#4 Using a combination of the above and/or a suggestion from the author.
